Spring Clean Your Skincare Shelf: What to Keep and Toss
As the weather warms up and the days get longer, it’s the perfect time to give your skincare shelf a refresh. Just like you’d declutter your closet for the season, your skincare routine needs the same attention. It's all about keeping what works and letting go of what no longer serves you. If your shelf is overflowing with half-used bottles, expired products, or things you just never reach for, it’s time for a spring clean.
At PEONY, we believe in timeless beauty and real experiences. So, let's take a step back and assess your skincare collection with honesty—what should you keep and what needs to go.

1. Check the Expiration Dates
First things first, check the expiration dates on your products. While it may seem obvious, many of us forget that skincare does expire. When products go past their prime, they can lose their effectiveness or even cause irritation. Here are some general guidelines:
Serums and treatments: These often have a shelf life of about 6-12 months once opened.
Moisturizers and sunscreens: Typically last 6-12 months.
Cleansers: Generally safe for about 6-12 months, but if you notice a change in texture or smell, it’s time to toss them.
For example, if you have a sunscreen that’s been sitting on your shelf since last summer, check the date. An expired sunscreen won’t give you the protection you need, and it’s best to replace it before the warmer months hit.
2. Evaluate the Ingredients
Not all skincare ingredients play nice with each other. If your products seem to be causing irritation or aren’t providing results, it might be due to ingredient incompatibility. Take a good look at your products and their active ingredients. Are you layering too many acids? Are you using a product that’s too rich for your skin type?
Products like retinoids and vitamin C can be tricky. They should be replaced once they’ve changed color (a sign of oxidation) or when they’ve been open for too long. And while your skin may have loved a certain product in the past, it’s okay to let go of things that no longer work.
3. Make Room for What’s Working
Once you’ve cleared out the expired or ineffective products, focus on what works for you. You don’t need 10 serums for glowing skin. A few well-chosen, high-quality products will do the trick.
4. Don’t Forget to Clean Your Tools
When was the last time you cleaned your facial roller, brushes, or sponges? These tools can harbor bacteria, which can undo all the good your skincare is doing. Spring clean your skincare tools just like you would your products. A quick wash with warm water and gentle soap will keep them fresh and hygienic.
5. Keep It Simple
Sometimes less is more. The more products you pile on, the more chances you have of disrupting your skin’s natural balance. Your spring skincare routine doesn’t need to be complex. Stick to the essentials: a gentle cleanser, an effective serum, a hydrating moisturizer, and sunscreen.
